Articles from Sakui Web | SEO Roundabouts
SEO Roundabouts
Introduction
After reading yet another SEO article (Just got the January 2009 .net mag), I feel there is a great emphasis on the same 5 topics that roll around the web. Although the article was interesting with new tools and case studys, It would be great to hear about some techniques apart from "indexing", "sitemapping", "links", "relevancy" and "blogging". So here's my notations for a few different essentials.
Speed
Download speed is esential not only for users but for search engines as well. There are two direct ways your search engine placements will be effected by download speed. 1) The natural download time as an overall measurement. 2) Click through rate, another permitter used by many search engines. If a user is fed up of waiting and navigates back, this is noted by the search engine. You can ensure your download time is reasonable by testing through various online tools. Its also a good idea to run these tests from a location similar to your target audience to simulate realistic results. My favorite speed test tools is at websiteoptimization.com.
Usability
Whilst spending so much time developing standards, building links, writing articles and whatever else you do It's always a good idea to test your websites usability regularly. This will ensure as you get more visitors, the come back.
Automation
With so many tasks to perform it's a good idea to automate some of these tasks. This is one great aspect of content management systems. Mondane tasks such as updating sitemaps are essential to maintain a health index rate in search engines. Although your pages can be crawled you will generally find sitemaps make this happen faster. This will ensure all your latest content and articles can be found straight away.
Rebuild
Optimise old code, after learning new css methods or seo techniques or even just to clean up code from constant updates. I recently reviewed the css for Sakui Web to find after numerous updates and appending code had become truncated, after a quick optimisation and sync of codes the css was reduced by 50%.
